Springs and manatee season
Springs Near Middleton, FL: Where to Swim, Tube and See Manatees This Winter, and What Changes on November 15
Clear, cool spring water is one of the best reasons to live in this part of Florida, and from Middleton a dozen springs sit within a day trip. The catch is timing: on November 15 manatee season starts, and the rules at several of them change overnight.

Crystal River, Homosassa, Rainbow, Wekiwa, Alexander and KP Hole cluster around 74 to 78 minutes, and Blue Spring in Orange City is the farthest at about 100.

*Estimated on November 7, 2026 with the OSRM routing service over OpenStreetMap data, from Downtown Middleton to each park as mapped in OpenStreetMap, with no traffic. These are not on our measured Middleton commute times page, so treat them as approximate. Fees and rules are from each operator's own page, read November 7, 2026.
One honest note on distance: Silver Springs is only about 37 miles away, but the route runs through Ocala, so it takes longer than the mileage suggests. Wekiwa is the reverse, close on the map and slowed by Orlando-area roads.
What changes at the springs on November 15?
November 15 is the start of manatee season, which runs to March 31. Blue Spring State Park closes its spring run to swimming, tubing and all other water activities, and the Crystal River refuge closes its seven warm-water manatee sanctuaries, including Three Sisters Springs, to paddlers. Three Sisters land tickets also switch to higher winter prices.
Manatees move into spring runs when the Gulf and the rivers cool, because spring water holds a steady temperature. The parks protect them by closing the water to people for the season.
- Blue Spring State Park: the park's activities page says swimming runs April 1 to November 14, and from November 15 to March 31 swimming and every other water activity in the spring run is prohibited. The same page gives March 15 as the end date in its scuba section and says the dates can shift with the manatees, so confirm before a spring visit.
- Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the seven warm-water sanctuaries are closed to all activity from November 15 to March 31. Paddle craft are allowed inside Three Sisters Springs only from April 1 to November 14.
- Three Sisters Springs boardwalk: the City of Crystal River's ticket page lists winter admission from November 15 to March 31.
That leaves one week, through Friday November 14, 2026, for a last swim at Blue Spring this year. After that, the season flips from swimming to watching.
Where can you swim in a spring near Middleton in winter?
Rainbow Springs, Wekiwa Springs and the Ocala National Forest springs (Alexander, Juniper, Silver Glen and Salt) all list swimming with no manatee-season closure. Spring water stays about 72 to 74 degrees all year, so a January swim is cool rather than cold. Rainbow and Wekiwa require day-use reservations, and forest springs can close when full.
Rainbow Springs State Park, Dunnellon. Swimming is in the buoyed headsprings area, which the park describes as 10 to 18 feet deep and about 72 degrees year-round, with no lifeguard. Rafts, tubes and other inflatables are banned in the park; life jackets and pool noodles are fine. A parking lot renovation runs from September 9, 2026 to February 4, 2027, so expect limited parking this winter.
Wekiwa Springs State Park, Apopka. The park page lists $6 per vehicle, hours of 8 a.m. to sunset, and spring water of 72 degrees year-round. Day-use reservations have been required since September 2, 2025.
Alexander Springs, Ocala National Forest. The Forest Service lists hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., swimming, canoe and kayak rentals, and scuba for certified divers. Recreation.gov notes that the swim area closing time follows the length of the day and is posted when you arrive.
Juniper, Silver Glen and Salt Springs. All three are Forest Service day-use areas run by a concessionaire, Naventure. Juniper has a spring pool that goes from shallow to deep enough to jump in, and no wading in the spring or runs. Silver Glen asks swimmers to stay inside the marked area, allows snorkeling but not scuba, and its own page gives the water as both 72 and 73 degrees. Salt Springs lists a steady 74 degrees, with swimming in the run nearest the source. Juniper's boardwalk area is closed for renovations as of this month.
Silver Springs is the exception people expect to be on this list. The state park page lists paddling and glass-bottom boats but no swimming, so plan it as a boat or kayak day.
Where can you see manatees near Middleton this winter?
The best bets from Middleton are Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, about 74 minutes away, where a boardwalk overlooks the spring, and Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, about 75 minutes away. Blue Spring State Park, about 100 minutes east, says hundreds of manatees gather in its spring run from mid-November to March.
| Place | How you see them | Cost | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River | Boardwalk reached by shuttle; no water access from land | Winter adult $20, senior (55+) $17.50, military $15, ages 6 to 15 $7.50, 5 and under free | Shuttle 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; last tickets 3:30 p.m. |
| Crystal River NWR Visitor Center | Exhibits and ranger-led programs daily in manatee season | Free | 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, Nov 15 to Mar 31 |
| Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park | Wildlife park with an underwater observatory | $13 adults, $5 ages 6 to 12 | 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; ticket counters close 4:45 p.m. |
| Blue Spring State Park, Orange City | Spring run viewing from land | $6 per vehicle | 8 a.m. to sundown |

For Three Sisters, you park at the Three Sisters Springs Center at 917 Three Sisters Springs Trail and ride the shuttle. The city warns that cars left in the plaza can be towed, all sales are final, and pets are not allowed (service animals are). The lower resident prices on that page are for Citrus County residents with ID.
At Homosassa, the park still lists the West Entrance, the Discovery Center, the Hippo Bridge and the lower level of the Underwater Observatory as closed, a notice dated January 27, 2025. Ask at the gate what is open before you pay.
Blue Spring warns that it often reaches capacity and may close for several hours. Arrive at opening.
Can you go tubing near Middleton, and when?
Yes, but not this winter at Rainbow Springs. The state park's tubing entrance on S.W. 180th Avenue Road is closed October through March, opens weekends from the first Saturday in April, and runs daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Blue Spring's short tubing run also closes for manatee season on November 15.
The Rainbow River is the classic tubing trip from this part of Florida, and there are two ways onto it.
- Rainbow Springs State Park tubing entrance: separate from the headsprings, with a shuttle that takes tubers about 2 miles upriver for a float of about 2 hours. In season it runs 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., tubers must be at least 5, and fees come from the concessionaire, Guest Services, at 833-945-2925. Weekends in September are listed as call to confirm.
- KP Hole Park: a Marion County park at 9435 SW 190th Ave Rd, Dunnellon, with tube rentals that include a return shuttle from Blue Run of Dunnellon Park. The county puts the average float at about 4 hours. Its page lists no hours or fees, so call before you drive.
The Rainbow River is an aquatic preserve, and the state park bans disposable food and drink containers on your person on the water. Pack a reusable bottle. Blue Spring's tubing, rented through Blue Springs Adventures, covers a short run of about an eighth of a mile and closes from November 15 with the rest of the spring run.
If you want to be on water this winter without a spring, our Lake Panasoffkee guide covers the ramps and paddling much closer to home.
Do you need a reservation to visit a Florida spring?
At several, yes. Rainbow Springs has required a day-use reservation for every visitor since April 29, 2026, and Wekiwa Springs since September 2, 2025. Blue Spring's activities page describes a day-use reservation program from July 15, 2026. Alexander Springs requires a vehicle reservation on summer weekends and holidays. Others can close when full.
Reservations are the biggest change at Florida springs in the last two years, and the one that ruins the most spontaneous trips. A short checklist before you leave Middleton:
- Rainbow Springs and Wekiwa Springs: book the day-use reservation through Florida State Parks before you go. Both park pages say all visitors need one.
- Blue Spring: the activities page says the day-use program started July 15, 2026, while the main park page shows a reservation button and a single-use day pass without saying it is required. Book anyway; it costs you nothing to be safe.
- Alexander Springs: on Recreation.gov, a one-day vehicle reservation is required on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Booking opens 14 days ahead at 10 a.m. Eastern, and the per-person entry fee is paid separately at the gate. Nothing applies in November.
- Juniper, Silver Glen and Salt Springs: no day-use reservation is listed, but the Forest Service says each may close when capacity is reached and expects weekends to fill.
If you will visit the forest springs often, the Forest Service lists an Ocala National Forest recreation pass sold by Naventure for $80 plus tax per person, good through the end of the year and covering Juniper, Alexander, Silver Glen and Salt Springs. Bought in November, that is a short year, so the timing matters.
Can you bring a dog, a cooler or a float to the springs?
Usually not into the water. Dogs are banned from the day-use areas at the Ocala National Forest springs and from the water at Rainbow and Blue Spring. Alexander Springs bans glass, alcohol and personal grills, Silver Springs bans alcohol, Rainbow bans inflatables, and Blue Spring bans food, coolers and disposables on the water.
| Spring | Pets | Alcohol and food | Floats and gear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver Springs | Leashed on trails and picnic areas; not on boats or in buildings | No alcohol in the park; coolers welcome | No motors at canoe launches; $4 launch fee |
| Rainbow Springs | Leashed, 6 ft; not in any water | No disposable food or drink containers on the river | No inflatables in the park; noodles and life jackets allowed |
| Blue Spring | Campground only; not in water areas, including service animals | No food, coolers, glass or disposables on the water | Inflatables over 72 inches in both width and length banned |
| Alexander Springs | Not allowed | No glass, alcohol or personal grills; bags subject to inspection | Scuba for certified divers |
| Juniper, Silver Glen, Salt Springs | Not allowed in day-use areas | No alcohol in Juniper's day-use area | No scuba at Silver Glen; no wading in Juniper's runs |
| Three Sisters Springs | Service animals only | Not stated | No water access from land |
Sources: Florida State Parks pages for each park, the U.S. Forest Service, Recreation.gov and the City of Crystal River; read November 7, 2026. Rules change, so check the park's page the morning you go.
One more thing to know at Silver Glen: the Forest Service warns that bears frequent the area and that raccoons and crows will raid an unattended picnic table.
Is Silver Springs worth the drive from Middleton?
For a first spring day, yes. Silver Springs State Park is the closest, about 65 minutes from Downtown Middleton, at $8 per vehicle, open 8 a.m. to sundown every day. Glass-bottom boat tours start at 10 a.m. and the operator lists them at $15 to $35, sold separately through SilverSprings.com.
The park sits at 5656 E. Silver Springs Blvd., east of Ocala. The glass-bottom boats come in a 30-minute tour and longer versions, and the park says tickets can sell out, so book ahead or arrive early. Pets are not allowed on the boats.
If you would rather paddle, the boat concession at SilverSprings.com lists kayaks from $30 to $60, paddleboards from $35 to $70 and canoes from $45 to $85. Bringing your own boat costs a $4 launch fee on top of park admission, and the park describes a 5-mile run downriver to Ray Wayside. The park's alerts note the Sea Hunt Deck has been closed since October 2025.
Pair it with lunch in downtown Ocala, which is on the way. Our guide to things to do around Middleton and Wildwood has more day trips in the same direction.
The local take
I was born and raised in Marion County, two of these springs are in my home county, and they are a large part of the lifestyle people move to this area for.
Here is how that connects to buying in Middleton. People fall for the lifestyle and then buy a house that makes it hard. Kayaks, paddleboards, tubes and a golf cart all need somewhere to live. Before you choose a floor plan, I would look at garage depth and width, whether there is room for a cart and a car and the gear, and what the recorded deed restrictions for that unit say about storing trailers, boats and equipment outside. Those rules are not the same everywhere, and they are easier to read before closing than after.
The other trade-off is direction. Every spring is at least an hour out, so the side of Middleton you live on, and how quickly you reach CR 470, I-75 or the Turnpike, adds up over a year of weekends. When I compare homesites for a buyer, I map the drive to the places they will actually go, not just to work.
As an independent buyer's agent, I am not tied to a builder's sales team. My job is to put the fees, the true monthly cost and those practical details side by side so the house fits the life you are moving here for.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a spring within 30 minutes of Middleton, FL?
Not among the swimming and manatee springs in this guide. By our OSRM estimate the closest, Silver Springs State Park, is about 65 minutes from Downtown Middleton, and Weeki Wachee is about 66. Closer to home, Lake Panasoffkee is the nearest large body of water for paddling and fishing.
How cold is the water at the springs near Middleton?
Rainbow Springs, Wekiwa Springs and Blue Spring list their water at about 72 degrees year-round, and Salt Springs lists 74. Silver Glen's own Forest Service page gives both 72 and 73. Because the temperature barely moves, the water feels cool in summer and comparatively mild in winter.
When does Blue Spring State Park reopen for swimming?
The park's swimming season starts April 1. Its activities page closes the spring run from November 15 to March 31 for manatees, though a scuba section on the same page says March 15, and the park notes dates can shift with the animals. Call the ranger station at 386-775-3663 before planning a spring visit.
Is there one pass for all the Ocala National Forest springs?
Yes. The Forest Service lists an Ocala National Forest recreation pass sold by the concessionaire Naventure at $80 plus tax per person, valid through the end of the year, covering Juniper, Alexander, Silver Glen and Salt Springs. At Alexander, pass holders still need the summer weekend vehicle reservation.
Can you swim with manatees near Middleton?
Not inside the protected sanctuaries. From November 15 to March 31 the Crystal River refuge closes its seven warm-water sanctuaries, including Three Sisters Springs, to all activity, and manatee interaction rules apply across Kings Bay. The refuge points visitors to its list of permitted tour operators, so ask any operator how they follow those rules.
When does Rainbow River tubing reopen in 2027?
Rainbow Springs State Park lists its tubing entrance as closed October through March, open on weekends from the first Saturday in April to Memorial Day, then daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Confirm prices with the concessionaire, Guest Services, at 833-945-2925.
