Middleton sits inside a city inside the fastest-growing metro area in the country. That growth is the context for everything about the community, including why it exists at all.
Where is Wildwood, Florida?
Wildwood is in Sumter County in central Florida, at the junction of Florida's Turnpike and Interstate 75, roughly an hour northwest of Orlando and about an hour and a half northeast of Tampa. Middleton is one of the residential communities inside the city.
The road junction is the practical point. Two major routes crossing in one place is unusual in central Florida, and it is why the area draws both residents and distribution development. If you drive to Orlando, Tampa, or either coast with any regularity, that access is worth more than it sounds on a map.
How fast is Sumter County growing?
Quickly. The U.S. Census Bureau recorded Sumter County at 129,752 residents in the 2020 Census and estimated 157,772 by July 2025, an increase of about 21.6 percent. The Bureau named the Wildwood and The Villages metro area the fastest-growing in the United States for 2022 to 2023.
Growth cuts both ways for a buyer. It supports values and brings services that were not here five years ago. It also means construction, traffic patterns that change, and a landscape that will not look the way it looks on your first visit. Ask what is approved for the parcels around a home before you buy it, not after.

How far is Middleton from Orlando and the airports?
Downtown Orlando is 45.7 miles and about 57 minutes by Florida's Turnpike, measured without traffic on September 21, 2026. Orlando International is 56.4 miles and the closest airport by drive time, Orlando Sanford 58.0 miles, Tampa International 76.0 miles, and Gainesville Regional 77.5 miles.

Ocala International is closer than any of them and is a general aviation airport with no scheduled passenger service, so it is not an option for visiting family. What about schools?
School attendance zones in Sumter County are set by the Sumter County School District and change as the county grows. This site publishes no school ratings and no attendance claims. Confirm the current assignment for a specific address directly with the district before you rely on it.
That is a deliberate policy rather than an omission. Attendance zones in a fast-growing county get redrawn, and a rating published on a real estate site is stale the moment it is written. The district is the only authority on both.
