What is Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, and how far is it from Middleton?
Dade Battlefield Historic State Park is an 80-acre state park in Bushnell that preserves the site of Dade's Battle of December 28, 1835, the opening clash of the Second Seminole War. It is about 12.9 miles from Downtown Middleton, around 23 minutes by car, and it is a National Historic Landmark with a small museum and short trails.
The park sits at 7200 Battlefield Parkway, Bushnell, FL 33513. Battlefield Parkway was formerly County Road 603, so older maps and some listings still use the CR 603 address. Florida acquired the land in 1921, and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. It is also on the Native American Heritage Trail and the Florida Black Heritage Trail.
We routed the trip on November 2, 2026 with the same method used on our Middleton commute times page (OSRM routing over OpenStreetMap data, free-flow, no live traffic). These are approximate and will run longer at busy times or on event days.

These routes run on US 301 and I-75, so this is a car trip, not a golf cart outing. Our golf cart rules guide covers where carts can and cannot go around Middleton and Wildwood.
What happens at Florida Heritage Day on November 14, 2026?
Florida Heritage Day is Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park. Admission is $5 per vehicle, covering park entry and the event. Expect a living-history timeline of several periods of Florida history, music, folk crafts, pioneer games and hands-on activities, with a food vendor on site.
Heritage Day is the gentler of the park's two big events. Instead of a battle, it walks you through Florida's past in stations: costumed interpreters representing different eras, traditional crafts being made in front of you, and old-fashioned games set up on the grounds. Florida State Parks and the Dade Battlefield Society both list the same date, hours and price.
- When: Saturday, November 14, 2026, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Cost: $5 per vehicle for park entry and the event, as of November 2026.
- Food: the society's listing mentions a food vendor; bring water and a backup snack anyway.
- Questions: the park's programs inbox is dadeprograms@floridadep.gov, or call the park at 352-793-4781.
Older listings online show different dates (November 9, 2024 and November 15, 2025). Those are past years. Use the current Florida State Parks event page to confirm before you go.
When is the 2027 Dade's Battle reenactment, and what does it cost?
The 2027 Dade Battle Weekend is Saturday, January 2 and Sunday, January 3, 2027, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The Dade Battlefield Society lists the cost as $3 for parking plus $5 per person, with children 5 and under free. The battle itself lasts about an hour, and the society suggests bringing your own chairs.
This is the park's signature event. Florida State Parks says about 2,000 people attend each January. Both days run the same program, so pick the one that suits your weekend.
Beyond the battle, the society lists soldier, Seminole and civilian camps, a sutler and vendor trade fair, historic arts and crafts, tree cutting and barricade building, children's games, food, and full-scale cannon firing.
Tips for the reenactment weekend
- Seating: bleachers are limited. Folding chairs are the move.
- Battle time: the society's pages do not publish the battle start time. Check the society events page or call 352-793-4781 the week before.
- Pricing note: the event's per-person fee differs from the park's normal per-vehicle fee. The society page is the one that applies to this weekend.
- The anniversary: the actual battle date is December 28. The reenactment is held on the first weekend of the new year.

What should you know before a regular visit to the park?
The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset every day, and the visitor center and museum are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry is $3 per vehicle for up to 8 people, or $2 per person on foot or bike. When no ranger is at the gate you pay with an honor envelope, so bring exact change.
Start in the visitor center, where the museum holds original artifacts from the battle alongside Seminole Wars exhibits, and a 12-minute film called This Land, These Men sets the scene. Then walk the grounds.
| Trail | Length | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Military Interpretive Trail | 0.2 mile | The battle site and its markers |
| Pine Flatwoods Nature Trail | 0.6 mile | Longleaf pine flatwoods on the west side of the park |
| Perimeter Trail | 1.6 miles | A longer loop around the property |
Lengths from the Florida State Parks handheld map (7-21-25). The park's amenities page calls the nature trail about a half mile.
- Dogs: welcome outdoors on a 6-foot handheld leash; not allowed in the visitor center or the lodge, and never left in a car.
- Accessibility: the park lists accessible parking, restrooms, picnic facilities, the visitor center and the Dade Lodge. Service animals are welcome everywhere.
- Picnics and gatherings: six picnic pavilions rent for $53.50 per day and the Dade Lodge (seats up to 98, with a kitchen) for $107 per day, both including tax, reservable up to 11 months ahead. There is a playground behind the Captain Gardiner pavilion.
- Parking: a small lot at the visitor center; oversized vehicles use the loop by the pavilions.
Fees are as of November 2026; the state notes that special events can carry extra fees.
What actually happened at Dade's Battle in 1835?
On December 28, 1835, Seminole warriors attacked a column of 107 U.S. Army officers and men under Brevet Major Francis Langhorne Dade, marching from Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay to Fort King near present-day Ocala. All but three soldiers died; six warriors fell. The battle began the Second Seminole War.
The background, as the park tells it: after Florida became a U.S. territory in 1822, settlers pressed onto land the Seminole had long lived on, and the Seminole practice of sheltering people escaping slavery added to the friction. The 1832 Treaty of Payne's Landing, signed by several chiefs, called for removal west of the Mississippi to Indian Territory, in present-day Oklahoma. Many Seminole refused to go.
Dade's column was sent north to reinforce Fort King. About 50 miles short of it, in the pine woods of what is now Bushnell, roughly 180 Seminole warriors attacked. At the time newspapers called it the Dade Massacre. The war it started became, in the park's words, the longest and most costly American Indian war in U.S. history.
The route Dade's men marched was the Fort King Road, and the park has hosted living-historian guided walks on it. In 1921, the Florida Legislature set aside money to preserve the site as a memorial.
What else is in Bushnell worth knowing as a Middleton resident?
Bushnell is a small railroad town about 18 minutes from Downtown Middleton. It holds the Historic Courthouse and the Sumter County Clerk's main office on E. McCollum Avenue, and Florida National Cemetery sits west of town off CR 476B. The city dates its post office to 1885 and its incorporation to 1911.
The City of Bushnell says the town is named for John W. Bushnell, who brought the railroad to the community. Its post office opened on October 28, 1885, and the city incorporated in 1911. City Hall is at 117 E. Joe P. Strickland Jr. Ave.
Florida National Cemetery
The VA's national cemetery for the region is at 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, inside the Withlacoochee State Forest. Grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, and the office is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. First interments were in 1988. If you plan a holiday visit, seasonal decorations such as wreaths and potted poinsettias may be placed on graves from December 1 through January 20.
Why Bushnell shows up in a Middleton life
County business can bring you here, too: the Clerk of Court's main office is at the Historic Courthouse, 215 E. McCollum Ave. For a wider look at what sits around Middleton, see our guide to things to do near Middleton and Wildwood and the Wildwood area page.
The local take
I was born and raised in Marion County, and Fort King, the post Dade's men never reached, stood in what is now Ocala. So this battlefield has always felt like part of my own backyard story. What surprises people shopping in Middleton is how close it is: about 23 minutes from downtown, less than many drives to the busiest Villages squares.
The trade-off people miss is direction. Middleton sits at a crossroads, and the homesite you choose quietly decides which way your life leans. Bushnell, the courthouse and I-75 run through US 301 and CR 470 to the west; the Turnpike and Leesburg pull east. If your errands, your doctors or your weekend habits point one way, a phase closer to that exit can save real time every week.
What I would check before choosing: drive the route from the actual homesite to US 301 at a weekday morning hour, not from the model center. Look at how the new roads inside Middleton connect today versus on the plan. And look at the measured commute table next to the builder's floor plans, because the right plan in the wrong spot is still the wrong home. As an independent agent, I can lay those options side by side for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need tickets in advance for Florida Heritage Day?
No advance tickets are mentioned. Florida State Parks lists Heritage Day on November 14, 2026 at $5 per vehicle, paid on arrival, covering both park entry and the event. Bring cash in small bills in case card payment is not available at the gate.
Can you use a Florida State Parks annual pass at Dade Battlefield?
The park's holiday craft class listings accept the Florida State Parks Annual Pass in place of the $3 vehicle entry, though the $10 activity fee still applies. Special events such as the reenactment set their own fees, so check the event page or call the park at 352-793-4781 before assuming a pass covers it.
Is Dade Battlefield worth visiting outside of event days?
Yes, if you enjoy history at your own pace. The museum of original battle artifacts, the 12-minute film and the 0.2 mile interpretive trail tell the story, and the Perimeter Trail adds a 1.6 mile walk around the property. Entry is $3 per vehicle, and the grounds open daily at 8 a.m.
Can you rent a pavilion or the lodge at Dade Battlefield for a party?
Yes. As of November 2026 the park rents six picnic pavilions at $53.50 per day and the Dade Lodge, which seats up to 98 and has a kitchen, at $107 per day, taxes included. Reservations open up to 11 months ahead by calling 352-793-4781. Alcohol is not allowed in the pavilions.
Who runs the Dade's Battle reenactment?
The Dade Battlefield Society, a nonprofit formed in 1987 that serves as the park's citizen support organization, organizes the reenactment with the park. Vendors and reenactors register through the society's website, dadebattlefield.com, which also posts the event's prices and schedule.
