Measured drive times come from this site's Middleton commute times data; approximate times are explained in the drive-time section below. Confirm times with each organizer before you go.

The Villages also has a Veterans Memorial Park near Spanish Springs, which The Villages describes as holding more than 15,000 engraved bricks. It is a Villages venue, listed here for identification. Middleton is a separate community, and Sumter County's own brick page notes that its program is not the one in Spanish Springs. Where do veterans in Middleton go for VA health care?

The Villages VA Clinic, at 8900 SE 165th Mulberry Lane in The Villages, is a VA outpatient clinic about 37 minutes from Downtown Middleton. It is open weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with primary and specialty care. Hospital stays and procedures it does not offer go through the Gainesville VA Medical Center.

The clinic is part of VA North Florida/South Georgia Health Care. Its main number, as listed on the VA's page, is 352-674-5000. The facility hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and closed on weekends, though individual services keep their own hours.

What the clinic lists on site

  • Everyday care: primary care, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, nutrition and social work.
  • Specialty clinics: audiology, cardiology, dental, gastroenterology, optometry, podiatry, sleep medicine, and physical and occupational therapy.
  • Mental health: mental health care, PTSD care, and substance use care.
  • Programs: women veteran care, whole health, toxic exposure screening, returning service member care and patient advocates.

The VA's page explains that veterans who need hospitalization are assessed and stabilized, then transferred either to a local hospital or to the Gainesville VA Medical Center depending on urgency. Procedures the clinic does not provide are referred to Gainesville. The Gainesville hospital, the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center at 1601 SW Archer Road, is about 72 miles and 87 minutes from Downtown Middleton by our approximate estimate.

Getting there without driving

The clinic's page describes two options: Disabled American Veterans vans, run with county veterans offices for scheduled appointments, and VA beneficiary travel, which can cover transport or mileage for those who qualify. Eligibility is set by the VA, so ask the clinic or the county veterans office before you count on it.

For the closest community hospitals and emergency rooms, the commute times page measures UF Health Leesburg Hospital at 26 minutes and UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital at 39 minutes from Downtown Middleton.

Who helps Middleton veterans file VA claims for free?

Sumter County Veteran Services helps veterans and their dependents prepare claims for VA compensation, pension, health care, education and other benefits at no charge. The office is at The Villages Sumter County Service Center, 7375 Powell Road in Wildwood, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment only.

This is a county office, not a private claims company. Florida law requires that its help be free to the person filing, and the county's page says so directly. Call 352-689-4400 to set an appointment; walk-ins are not listed as an option.

The office's page also links out to the pieces veterans ask about most: service-connected disability, non-service-connected pension, VA health care, funeral and survivor benefits, life insurance, education benefits and the VA forms library. It posts the VA's current pension rates and the income thresholds the VA uses for some health care priority groups.

Plan the trip: The Villages Sumter County Service Center is about 25 minutes from Downtown Middleton by our approximate estimate. Other county offices new residents need are listed in our first 30 days checklist, so check whether you can pair errands in one visit.

Bring your DD-214 or other discharge papers to any first meeting. If you need a copy, Florida's motor vehicle agency points veterans to the National Archives, which takes requests online.

Is there free counseling for veterans near Middleton?

Yes. The Ocala Vet Center, at 3300 SW 34th Ave., Suite 140, offers confidential counseling to veterans, service members and their families at no cost in a non-medical setting. You do not need to be enrolled in VA health care or have a disability rating. It is about 46 minutes from Middleton by approximate estimate.

Vet Centers are a separate VA program from the clinics. The Ocala center lists individual, group, couples and family counseling, grief and bereavement counseling, and counseling related to military sexual trauma, with both male and female counselors. Its posted groups include PTSD groups, art therapy and a guitar program.

  • Appointments: 352-237-1947. Walk-ins are also welcome, according to the center's page.
  • Hours: weekday hours starting at 8 a.m., plus non-traditional hours that change with demand. Call to confirm.
  • After hours: the Vet Center call center answers around the clock at 877-927-8387.
  • First visit: expect an intake packet, and bring discharge papers such as a DD-214 if you have them.

This guide describes what exists and where. It does not rate any provider. Questions about whether a program fits your situation belong with the center or your VA care team.

How far is Florida National Cemetery from Middleton?

Florida National Cemetery, at 6502 SW 102nd Ave. in Bushnell, is about 20 miles and 29 minutes from Downtown Middleton by an approximate route estimate. It sits in the Withlacoochee State Forest, is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and its office is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For many Middleton households this is the most meaningful address in the county. The VA announced a fourth national cemetery for Florida in 1980, the state transferred forest land for it on Feb. 15, 1983, and the first burial took place in 1988, according to the National Cemetery Administration.

  • Memorial Pathway: a walkway lined with memorials to veterans, mostly honoring service in 20th-century conflicts. The cemetery counted 51 of them as of April 2018.
  • Carillon: donated by AMVETS in October 1993, in the meadow beside the original administration building.
  • Colonnade: the main assembly area, where the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies take place.
  • Visiting a grave: fresh cut flowers can be placed at any time; the grounds crew removes them as they fade. A kiosk helps locate graves.

The office number is 352-793-7740. Burials are scheduled through the National Cemetery Scheduling Office, not the cemetery itself, and the cemetery page lists the steps.

The cemetery's Wreaths Across America volunteers set a goal of 60,000 wreaths for Dec. 19, 2026. As of October 26 the group reported 1,952 sponsored, so this is a good year to help if you plan to be in town.

What veteran property tax exemptions apply to a home in Sumter County?

The Sumter County Property Appraiser lists a $5,000 exemption for veterans with a service-connected disability of at least 10 percent, a full exemption for an honorably discharged veteran with a service-connected total and permanent disability, and a discount for combat-disabled veterans 65 and older. Applications are due March 1.

These are filed with the Property Appraiser, not with the VA or the county veterans office. Here is how the appraiser's own pages describe them as of October 2026.

Veteran-related property tax exemptions listed by the Sumter County Property Appraiser (as of October 2026)
ExemptionFlorida statuteWho the appraiser says it coversProof the appraiser asks for

The total and permanent disability exemption and the combat-disability discount apply to a homestead, and the appraiser's homestead rules turn on living in the home on January 1. Questions go to the Property Appraiser's office at 352-569-6800. Whether one applies to you is a decision for the appraiser and your tax professional, not this blog; nothing here is tax advice.

Why it matters before you buy: an exemption changes the yearly tax bill, which is part of the true monthly cost of any home you compare. The Middleton market page shows every recorded sale and listing in 2026 for the price side of that math.

What else should a veteran update after moving to Middleton?

After moving to Middleton, a veteran can add the Veteran designation to a Florida driver license by bringing a DD-214 to a service center, register with The Villages VA Clinic, and set up a county claims appointment. Active duty and military retirees can also buy Florida's $20 Military Gold Sportsman's License.

These are the veteran-specific items to add to the general new-resident list.

  1. Veteran designation on your license. Florida's motor vehicle agency says any Florida resident veteran can add it at a service center with a DD-214 showing honorable discharge. A replacement license is free when the designation is the only change. Veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability can get the license itself, and the designation, with no fee.
  2. Your VA care team. If you already use VA health care elsewhere, contact The Villages VA Clinic at 352-674-5000 about moving your care.
  3. Claims and benefits review. A first appointment with Sumter County Veteran Services, 352-689-4400.
  4. Hunting and fishing. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sells a $20 Military Gold Sportsman's License with the same privileges as the $100 Gold Sportsman's License. It is for active duty and retired members, Florida National Guard and Coast Guard included, who live or are stationed in Florida. Other veterans and family members do not qualify for it. Lake Panasoffkee, west of Middleton, is the obvious first trip; see our Lake Panasoffkee guide.
  5. Property tax. Note the March 1 deadline for any exemption in the section above.

Everything else, from utilities to voter registration, is in the Middleton first 30 days checklist.

How the approximate times were made: on October 26, 2026 each address was geocoded with OpenStreetMap and routed from Downtown Middleton with the public OSRM router, the same method this site uses for its measured commute times, but without the Google Maps cross-check those routes get. They are free-flow times with no traffic and no stops, so allow extra time at busy hours.

The local take

I am a Navy Veteran, born and raised in Marion County, and I represent buyers independently. When a veteran asks me about Middleton, the first thing I do is put the VA clinic on the map next to the lot, the same way I would check a work commute. About 37 minutes each way is fine for an annual checkup. It is a different calculation if you have weekly physical therapy or a spouse with standing appointments, and that can tip the choice between two homes or two parts of the county.

The trade-off people miss is the tax side. A disability exemption can change the yearly bill on a new build by real money, but only once the home is your homestead, and the January 1 rule decides which tax year that starts. Which side of January 1 your closing lands on can change when an exemption starts. I would get the Property Appraiser to confirm what you qualify for before you settle on a budget, and run the final numbers past your own tax professional.

If you plan to use a VA home loan on new construction, ask the builder early how their contract and timeline work with VA financing, and have a licensed lender walk you through it before you pick a floor plan. Those answers are easier to get before a deposit than after. I am glad to help you line up the questions, the drive times and the paperwork, and to sit on your side of the table with any builder.

Frequently asked questions

Is Middleton part of The Villages?

No. Middleton is a separate community in Wildwood with no age restriction. It is developed by The Villages Development Company, LLC, but sharing a developer does not mean sharing amenities or rules. Villages venues in this guide, like Veterans Memorial Park, are named for identification only. Our Middleton vs The Villages page compares the two side by side.

Can I still add a family member to Wildwood's Display of Honor this year?

The City of Wildwood set the 2026 deadline for names at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, so this year's list has closed. Call the city at 352-461-0134 to ask whether late names can be added or when submissions open for 2027.

How much does a memorial brick at the Sumter County Veteran's Memorial cost?

Sumter County charges $50 per engraved brick, paid online or by check to Sumter BOCC. Bricks are ordered in July and placed in front of the Sumter County Courthouse in Bushnell by the end of September, and those veterans are recognized at a Veterans Day ceremony. This program is separate from the Villages brick memorial in Spanish Springs.

Do I need a VA disability rating to use the Ocala Vet Center?

No. The Ocala Vet Center says you do not need to be registered for VA care, rated for a service-connected disability, or receiving other VA benefits. On the first visit it will look for proof of service, such as a DD-214, and you will complete a confidential intake packet.

When is Wreaths Across America at Florida National Cemetery in 2026?

Saturday, Dec. 19, 2026. The Bushnell group lists wreath distribution starting at 10 a.m. and the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the Flag Assembly circle. It is a public event, and the group takes wreath sponsorships and volunteers through its Wreaths Across America page.

Is the Florida National Cemetery office open on Veterans Day?

Yes. The cemetery office keeps weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closes on federal holidays except Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The grounds themselves are open every day from sunrise to sunset.
