Moving to Middleton, FL: Your First 30 Days Checklist for Utilities, License, Tag, Voting and Homestead
The keys are the easy part. The first month in a new Florida home is a short list of accounts, offices and deadlines, and a few of them start a clock the day you arrive. This is that list for Middleton, sourced to the agencies that run each step and dated so you know what to re-check.

What do you need to do after moving to Middleton, FL?
In your first month in Middleton, set up water, sewer and trash with the City of Wildwood if it serves your address, start electric with SECO Energy or Duke Energy, title your car within 10 days and get a Florida driver license within 30, update your voter record, and note the March 1 homestead deadline.
The short version
- Florida's motor vehicle agency gives new residents 10 days to title and register a vehicle and 30 days to get a Florida driver license.
- Filing for homestead exemption is one of the things Florida counts as establishing residency, so it starts those license and tag clocks too.
- The Sumter County Tax Collector, Property Appraiser and Supervisor of Elections all have offices at 7375 Powell Road in Wildwood.
- Wildwood's website points residents to two power companies, SECO Energy and Duke Energy; which one serves you depends on the exact address.
- Sumter County homestead applications are due March 1, based on owning and living in the home on January 1.
What is on the Middleton move-in checklist?
A Middleton move-in checklist has eight items: water, sewer and trash; electric; Florida auto insurance; vehicle title and registration within 10 days; a Florida driver license within 30 days; voter registration; homestead exemption by March 1; and Sumter County emergency alerts. Several can be started online before the moving truck arrives.
Here is the whole month on one screen. Each row is covered in detail below, with the agency's own page linked so you can confirm anything that has changed since October 2026.
| Task | Who handles it | Timing | How to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water, sewer, trash | City of Wildwood Utilities, where it serves your address | Before move-in; the city says allow up to 72 hours | Online utility account application, or 352-330-1336 |
| Electric | SECO Energy or Duke Energy, depending on the address | Before move-in; SECO says allow up to three business days | SECO's online SmartHub portal, or the utility that serves you |
| Florida auto insurance | A Florida-licensed insurance agent | Before you title the car | Required before registration |
| Vehicle title and registration | Sumter County Tax Collector | Within 10 days of establishing residency | In person, with VIN verification |
| Florida driver license | Sumter County Tax Collector | Within 30 days of establishing residency | In person, with REAL ID documents |
| Voter registration | Sumter County Supervisor of Elections | Any time; check status before an election | Online at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov, by mail or in person |
| Homestead exemption | Sumter County Property Appraiser | Own and live there January 1; file by March 1 | Online application or in person |
| Emergency alerts | Sumter County (Alert Sumter) | Before you need it | Sign up through the county website |
One building, three errands. The Sumter County Tax Collector (Suite 135), the Supervisor of Elections (Suite 125) and a Property Appraiser office all list 7375 Powell Road in Wildwood as an address. Bring your closing documents, your out-of-state title and your ID documents, and you can handle a good share of this list in one trip.
Who provides water, sewer and trash service in Middleton?
The City of Wildwood lists city water, city sewer and solid waste collection as its utility services, where available, and new accounts start with an online application. As of October 2026 the city lists a $100 residential deposit and a $15 processing fee. Call Wildwood Utilities at 352-330-1336 to confirm your Middleton address is served.
Wildwood's utility pages describe the service as available where the city's lines reach, so the first call is to confirm the exact address. The online utility account application asks for the property address, your start date, a driver license number and image, the last four digits of your Social Security number or a Federal ID, and a lease if you rent.
What the city lists for a new account (October 2026)
- Deposit: $100 residential, refundable after one year of on-time payments, according to the application's introduction.
- Processing fee: $15.
- Timing: the application says to allow up to 72 hours for processing.
- Photo ID: a US driver license, state ID or passport.
Paying the bill
The city takes payments online and by phone (card payments carry a 2.95 percent convenience fee, e-checks $1.95), by mail, and in person at City Hall, 100 N. Main Street, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., where cards carry no fee. There is an after-hours drop box on Wonders Street on the south side of City Hall; the city asks that no cash go in it. Bills not paid by the 15th can be shut off, with a fee to reconnect.
Trash day and recycling
Wildwood contracts its residential collection to Waste Management. The city assigns pickup days by location: addresses north of County Road 462 on Friday, and on or south of CR 462 on Tuesday. Yard debris goes out by 7 a.m. on collection day, and bulk pickups are scheduled and usually collected within three business days. One thing that surprises people from other cities: Wildwood no longer issues recycling carts, and curbside waste goes to a waste-to-energy facility.
The city's residential trash rate page was labeled effective through September 30, 2026 when checked on October 19, 2026, so ask for the current rate when you open the account.
One more question worth asking: the developer's Middleton cost-of-living sheet lists water and sewer separately from irrigation, so ask whether the home has its own irrigation meter and how it is billed.
Who provides electricity in Middleton, SECO Energy or Duke Energy?
Wildwood's city website points residents to two power companies, Duke Energy and SECO Energy, the Sumter Electric Cooperative. Which one serves a home depends on the exact address, not the community name. SECO names Sumter County in its seven-county territory and publishes an online territory map, so check the address before you schedule a connection.
Do not assume your neighbor's provider is yours. Look up the address on SECO's service territory page, and if it falls outside, contact Duke Energy Florida.
Starting service with SECO Energy
- Online: residential service starts through SECO's SmartHub portal. You verify an email, give your Social Security number, date of birth and driver license or ID, then pick a weekday connection date.
- Timing: SECO asks for up to three business days.
- Deposit: SECO runs a utility credit score check to see whether the deposit can be waived. If not, the deposit is paid at a member service center. SECO does not publish the amount on that page.
- Contact: Member Services at (352) 793-3801. The main office is at 330 South U.S. Highway 301 in Sumterville.
On a brand new home, ask your builder whether the electric account is already in place at closing or whether you open it yourself.
How do you get a Florida driver license and tag after moving to Middleton?
Florida's motor vehicle agency says new residents must get a Florida driver license within 30 days of establishing residency and title and register their vehicles within 10 days. In Sumter County those services run through the Tax Collector, which has offices in Wildwood, The Villages, Bushnell and Sumterville. You need Florida auto insurance before you register.
When the clock starts
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles counts you as a resident once any of these happens: you start work in Florida, enroll a child in a Florida public school, register to vote in Florida, file for homestead exemption, or live in Florida for more than six consecutive months. Note the homestead item. Filing for the exemption is itself a residency trigger.
One other county tax collector's page gives 30 days for vehicle registration. The state agency's own pages say 10 days, so plan around 10.
Titling and registering your car
- Insurance first: a Florida policy from a Florida-licensed agent. The Sumter County Tax Collector lists at least $10,000 of personal injury protection and $10,000 of property damage liability.
- VIN verification: required for any vehicle not titled in Florida. Bring the car to the office, or have form HSMV 82042 completed by an approved verifier.
- Paperwork: the original out-of-state title (or your lienholder's information), photo ID, and all owners present or a signed absent-owner form.
- The fee people forget: a $225 initial registration fee the first time a Florida plate is issued in your name.
Your Florida driver license
Bring REAL ID documents: a primary identity document such as a certified birth certificate or passport, proof of your Social Security number, and two proofs of your residential address. Your out-of-state license is surrendered.
Sumter County Tax Collector offices (October 2026)
| Office | Address | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Wildwood | 7375 Powell Road, Suite 135, Wildwood | (352) 689-4540 |
| The Villages | 8033 E County Road 466, The Villages | (352) 689-4645 |

| Sumterville | 215 Gloria Rowe Hayward Way, Sumterville | (352) 689-4630 |
The Tax Collector encourages appointments for everything and requires them for written tests and for non-US citizens. Road tests are by appointment at The Villages and Bushnell offices only. Since February 6, 2026, exams must be given in English under the state's rule. Services are limited to Sumter County residents.
When do you file for homestead exemption in Sumter County?
Sumter County homestead exemption applications are due March 1. Eligibility is based on holding title and living in the home as your permanent residence on January 1 of that year. The exemption can lower taxable value by up to $50,000, and the Sumter County Property Appraiser takes applications online and at its Bushnell and Wildwood offices.
The calendar matters more than people expect. According to the Sumter County Property Appraiser, first-time applicants need to show they were living in the home on January 1. So a buyer who closes and moves in this fall and is living there on January 1, 2027 would file for 2027, with the application due March 1, 2027. Someone who moves in after January 1 waits for the following year.
How the exemption is structured
- The first $25,000 applies to all property taxes, including school taxes.
- The second $25,000 applies to non-school taxes only.
What to have ready
- Your Social Security number and evidence of ownership, such as the deed.
- Proof of residency the appraiser may ask for: a Florida driver license or ID, a Florida plate number, a Florida voter registration number, or utility payments at the address. This is why the license, tag and voter steps come first.
Moving from a homestead elsewhere in Florida? The appraiser lists a separate form, DR-501T, to transfer the assessment difference from the old homestead, filed along with the DR-501 for the new one. Whether that transfer helps in your situation is a question for the Property Appraiser's office or a tax professional, not a real estate agent.
Offices: 218 E. McCollum Avenue, Bushnell, and 7375 Powell Road, Wildwood, both 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; the Wildwood office closes for lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Phone 352-569-6800. Checked October 19, 2026.
How do you register to vote or update your address in Sumter County?
If you hold a Florida driver license or ID card, you can register or update your voter record online at RegisterToVoteFlorida.gov with the last four digits of your Social Security number. The Sumter County Supervisor of Elections also accepts paper applications by mail or in person in Wildwood and Bushnell, but not by email or fax.
The online route needs the Florida license number, which is one more reason to do the Tax Collector visit early. Without it, print the state form, sign it and deliver it.
- Wildwood office: 7375 Powell Road, Suite 125.
- Bushnell office: 332 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.
- Phone: 352-569-1540. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Timely note: the Supervisor of Elections lists early voting for the November general election from Saturday, October 24 through Saturday, October 31, 2026. If you just moved, check your registration status on the county's voter lookup page before you go.
Can you drive a golf cart from Middleton into Wildwood?
It depends on the route. The City of Wildwood adopted a new golf cart and low-speed vehicle ordinance in 2026 and published a street map showing where carts may operate, with signs where carts cannot cross jurisdiction lines. The city also runs a voluntary cart registry and free safety classes through its police department.
Carts are planned into some Middleton homes: the developer's cost-of-living sheet lists a golf car space in the garage for the Field Day and The Range home series. Once you leave the community, the rules are the city's.
- The ordinance: Ordinance O2026-28, adopted 4 to 1 by the city commission and announced July 13, 2026. It replaces a 2013 ordinance that was updated in 2017.
- Where to drive: the city's published street map, linked from its announcement.
- Registry and classes: voluntary registration and free safety classes; the city's information line is 352-330-1355.
Before you buy a cart or count on driving one to dinner, check the map for the exact route from your street. For how far common errands are by car, see the measured Middleton drive times: Wildwood City Hall is about 21 minutes and 12.4 miles from Downtown Middleton by the site's routing estimate.
The rest of the move-in list
Emergency alerts
Sumter County runs Alert Sumter, its emergency alert program, with signup through the county website. It is easier to set up in October than during a storm watch.
Internet
The developer's cost-of-living sheet says high-speed internet, lawn care, pest control and other contracted services are not included in its estimates. Ask your builder or the Middleton Welcome Home Center which internet providers are wired to your street before move-in day, and book the install early.
The Welcome Home Center
Middleton's Welcome Home Center at 2219 Dr. Randy McDaniel Way is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, phone 352-751-7700, according to the community's site. It is the place to ask community questions that no county office can answer.
Know the true monthly cost
The developer publishes a cost-of-living sheet (its file name is dated May 2025) that estimates monthly utilities, irrigation, trash, insurance, property taxes and a development district assessment by home series, and it notes that costs change without notice. This site has not independently verified those figures, so ask for the current version in writing. Our Middleton new construction guide covers what else to confirm before you choose a lot, and the events calendar is the quickest way to meet the neighborhood once you are in.
The local take
I was born and raised in Marion County, and most of this list is routine Florida paperwork. The part I would pull forward is the part people treat as move-in chores: who serves the address. Water, power, trash and internet are set by the specific lot, and they decide the deposit you pay, the day your trash goes out and the bill you live with. I would ask for those answers before writing an offer, not after closing.
The second thing I watch is the calendar. Whether you are living in the home on January 1 sets which year your homestead filing applies to, and filing for homestead starts the state's license and tag clocks. If your closing date sits near the turn of the year, put that question to the Property Appraiser and your tax professional while you still have room to plan.
Third, the true monthly cost. The mortgage is one line. The developer's own sheet lists utilities, irrigation, trash, insurance, taxes and a development district assessment, and it excludes internet and lawn care. As an independent agent, I would get the current numbers for the exact home series and lot in writing, compare them across builders and resale homes, and then choose the floor plan. If you want a second set of eyes on that math, here is how I work.
Frequently asked questions
Does Middleton have an age restriction?
No. Middleton is an all-ages community in Wildwood, developed by The Villages Development Company, LLC. It is a separate community from The Villages, and sharing a developer does not mean sharing amenities or rules. For a side-by-side look at fees, rules and homes, see the Middleton vs The Villages comparison on this site.
Can I keep driving on my out-of-state plates for a while after I move?
Not for long. Florida's motor vehicle agency says vehicles must be titled and registered within 10 days of establishing residency, which includes starting a job here, enrolling a child in public school, registering to vote or filing for homestead. Get Florida insurance first, then bring the car or a completed VIN verification form to the Tax Collector.
Do I need an appointment at the Sumter County Tax Collector?
Appointments are encouraged for every service and required for written tests and for non-US citizens. Driver license walk-ins are taken until 4:30 p.m., and other walk-in services until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Road tests are by appointment only at The Villages and Bushnell offices. Book through the Tax Collector's website.
Does Wildwood have curbside recycling?
Not as of October 2026. The City of Wildwood says it no longer issues recycling carts, and curbside waste goes to a waste-to-energy facility. Collection is contracted to Waste Management, with pickup on Friday north of County Road 462 and on Tuesday on or south of it. Confirm your day when you open the account.
How do I pay a City of Wildwood utility bill?
Online or by phone (cards carry a 2.95 percent fee and e-checks $1.95), by mail to the Utility Department at 100 N. Main Street, or in person at City Hall on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., where cards carry no fee. Bank draft is available through the city's EZ Pay form.
Where is the Middleton Welcome Home Center?
The Welcome Home Center is at 2219 Dr. Randy McDaniel Way and is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, according to Middleton's official site. The phone number is 352-751-7700. It is the place for questions about the community itself, while county offices handle licenses, tags, voting and homestead.
